Major Show of Force Raises Tensions in the Region
In a significant display of military force, China has recently conducted a major operation involving the deployment of 68 warplanes and 10 warships in the vicinity of Taiwan, escalating regional tensions and drawing international attention. The move comes amid growing unease over Taiwan’s status and increasing assertiveness in the region.
China’s Show of Strength
Over the past 24 hours, China executed a notable show of military power by flying 68 warplanes over Taiwan while simultaneously positioning ten naval vessels around the island. This maneuver marks one of the most substantial demonstrations of military force by China in the region this year.
Escalation in a Long-Standing Conflict
China’s actions follow a long-standing dispute over Taiwan’s status, dating back to the island’s declaration of independence in 1949 during the Chinese Civil War. Beijing has consistently asserted its claim over Taiwan as an integral part of its territory, a stance that has exacerbated tensions in the region.
Recent Incidents
The recent deployment of 68 warplanes occurred shortly after Taiwan’s government reported the presence of 35 Chinese aircraft in its airspace, intensifying concerns over the regional military balance. Taiwan also disclosed that some of the warplanes had crossed the Bashi Channel and joined the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong for military exercises in the Pacific. Japan reported that its Navy had detected the Shandong and six accompanying ships, including destroyers and frigates, sailing approximately 400 miles south of Miyakojima island.
Changing U.S. Policy
While the United States has traditionally maintained a neutral stance on Taiwan, adhering to the One China policy, recent shifts in U.S. policy have indicated stronger support for Taipei. President Joe Biden has expressed his support for Taiwan, and last year, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made an official visit to the island.

Taiwan has declared its intent to closely monitor Chinese activities around the island and bolster its defenses in response to the escalating military actions. In the past year, Beijing has significantly increased its military presence near Taiwan, conducting frequent warship and warplane operations.

The latest deployment of Chinese warplanes and warships occurred shortly after the United States and Canada sailed warships through the Taiwan Strait, challenging Beijing’s territorial claims. In a separate move, China positioned its naval formation, led by the aircraft carrier Shandong, approximately 70 miles southeast of Taiwan, conducting drills simulating various military scenarios.
A Blueprint for Integration
This week, Beijing unveiled its blueprint for the integration of Taiwan, signaling its intentions regarding the island’s future. Chinese officials emphasized the importance of the Fujian province in their strategy toward Taiwan, aiming to make it the first port of call for Taiwanese residents settling in the People’s Republic of China.
